Old Cemetery

Only tombstones along the cemetery wall remain from the original cemetery. They look silently and unitedly at a young lime tree surrounded by an oak bench across the green lawn, symbolizing Czech-German unity despite all past injustices.

At the Novotny Glass Centre in Nový Bor, you can watch the glassblowers blowing glass while enjoying the specialities of the local restaurant Hut'. The Novotny Glass Studio owes its appearance to Bořek Šípek, a famous Czech architect and designer. In the Novotny Glass Museum, which is part of the complex, you can see a cross-section of the best the world of glass has to offer, and in the Novotny Glass Gallery, you can also purchase glass made by local glassmakers.

The Oldest Glassworks in Bohemia

Chřibská

Where was the first Czech glass made? In Horní Chřibská, in the middle of the Lusatian Mountains! The history of the local glassworks spans for almost 600 years and is full of famous glassmaking names – Palme, Kittl, Henck… they all helped to keep the fire burning in the glassworks, which has been lit constantly for more than half a millennium. A few years ago, the fire in the oldest glassworks in Bohemia finally died down, but its glow warms the hearts of local patriots to this day.

In the glassworks in Svojkov, Mr. Haidl and his son produce exact and archaeologically documented replicas of the glass from which the warrior Vikings or the ancient Romans drank long ago. If you visit, you can even have a glass toast with heroes of historical films!

The oldest glass school in Europe, founded by the Kamenický Šenov glassmakers and chandelier makers themselves. The founders wanted to have enough apprentices for the glass masters, so that the craft is not only passed on, but also developed. The school is run in the same spirit to this day. It is one of the best equipped schools of its kind in the world, is part of the prestigious ASPnet comprised of a selection of schools under the patronage of UNESCO, and functions as a meeting and collaboration point for glassmakers and other art and craft professionals from all over Europe.
